Languishing

Feeling ‘blah’?

You are definitely not alone.

Feeling isolated from your friends and family? Feeling constantly torn and divided as you to try to work from home while parenting and teaching your kids? Feeling as if you are prevented from accomplishing anything? Living in a constant state of uncertainty? Feeling your sense of independence and control slipping?

Sound familiar? For many of us, this is a little snippet of what pandemic life is like. We are languishing.

Adam Grant began trending this term in his NYTtimes article, “There’s a name for the blah you’re feeling: It’s called languishing.” Grant brought to light the model of mental health being on a continuum developed and researched by Positive Psychologist Dr. Corey Keyes. On one end of the spectrum we have LANGUISHING, or the absence of mental health, which leads further down the continuum to Mental Illness. On the other end of the spectrum is a state of wellness and mental health, which Dr. Keyes’ terms FLOURISHING. It looks like this:

FLOURISHING----------LANGUISHING----------MENTAL ILLNESS

In a recent podcast with my good friend and Associate Pastor at Evangel Church, Chris Canning, we delved into this trending word LANGUISHING. We took a look at the factors that are involved in a state of FLOURISHING to help us understand why our mental health is being threatened within this state of current affairs. Using Keye’s model we also explored how we can make our way along the spectrum towards greater mental health.

Hoping to see you all flourish!!
